Liverpool Conservatives Welcome Liverpool Party Central

The Conservative Party in Liverpool is excited by the prospect of the new Liverpool Party Central feature on the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo website.

Liverpool Party Central could help voters by giving them some of the information they need to make their decision come polling day.

If the concept works, voters will have an opportunity to compare all the parties and discuss the issues that matter to them, in one place and on one site.

The site also gives the parties and candidates standing at the general and local elections another chance to interact with the electorate. Candidates can inform voters of their progress during the campaign, their priorities for their constituencies and their party’s vision for the future.

It is important that the site does not become an “arena for anoraks” but a genuine opportunity for new participants to get involved. With this in mind I would recommend an emphasis on quality postings by all parties to avoid the project descending into farce.

I would also urge all contributors to remain both positive and honest. If this does not happen, Liverpool Party Central will only serve to put off more people than it attracts. That would make the site completely counter productive and will only be bad for our local democracy.

Following scandals in Westminster and the “Punch and Judy” nature of politics in our city, it is understandable that many voters are turned off by politics in Liverpool. At the last few elections in Liverpool, voter turnout has been disappointingly low. This has to change. The issues that face both this city and this country are too important.

Politicians need to inspire people and help them believe that no matter how difficult the road ahead may look, there is a better future ahead. Liverpool Party Central gives them an opportunity to do just that and I congratulate the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo for introducing the site.

Let’s hope that the site inspires new people to get involved in the debate about the future of our city and the future of our country. Who knows, maybe one day our futures will depend on the people who first became involved in 2010?

Good luck to all candidates in the campaign ahead.
